Reaching Spiti Valley requires a road journey, as there is no direct air or rail connectivity to the valley itself. You can reach the valley via two primary routes starting from either Shimla or Manali.

1. Primary Routes

For the best experience, many travelers recommend the Spiti Circuit: entering via Shimla and exiting via Manali (or vice-versa)

  • Via Shimla (The All-Weather Route):

    • Path: Delhi/Chandigarh → Shimla → Reckong Peo → Tabo → Kaza.

    • Status: Open year-round (except during extreme winter storms).

    • Benefit: This route offers a gradual increase in altitude, which helps significantly with acclimatization to prevent altitude sickness.

    • Duration: Typically takes 2 days from Shimla to reach Kaza (the regional hub).

  • Via Manali (The Faster/Adventurous Route):

    • Path: Delhi/Chandigarh → Manali → Rohtang Pass (or Atal Tunnel) → Kunzum Pass → Kaza.

    • Status: Only open from late May/June to October.

    • Benefit: Much shorter distance, but very steep altitude gain and rougher road conditions (especially the Gramphu to Batal stretch).

2. Transport Options

Public Transport (HRTC Bus)

This is the most budget-friendly option. Himachal Roadways (HRTC) operates regular "Ordinary" buses.

  • From Shimla: You typically take a bus to Reckong Peo (approx. 8–10 hours), stay overnight, and then catch the early morning bus (around 7:00 AM) from Reckong Peo to Kaza.

  • From Manali: During the summer months, two HRTC buses usually leave Manali for Kaza early in the morning (around 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM).

Shared Taxis

  • Commonly available from the Manali Taxi Stand or Reckong Peo.

  • These are usually Sumo or Bolero vehicles that depart early in the morning once full. It is faster than the bus but more expensive.

Private Taxi / Self-Drive

  • Private Cabs: You can hire a dedicated SUV (Innova, Scorpio, or 4x4) from Chandigarh, Shimla, or Manali.

  • Self-Drive/Biking: Many travelers rent Royal Enfields or drive high-clearance SUVs.

    • Note: A vehicle with high ground clearance is essential, especially for the Manali-Kaza route which involves several water crossings (nullahs).

3. Nearest Transit Points

  • Nearest Airport: * Bhuntar (Kullu): ~250 km from Kaza (limited flights).

    • Chandigarh: ~500 km from Kaza (best connectivity).

  • Nearest Railway Station: * Shimla: Narrow gauge (toy train).

    • Chandigarh/Kalka: Major broad gauge stations.

Important Travel Tips

  • Best Time: June to September for the full circuit; February to March for the "White Spiti" winter experience (Shimla route only).

  • Inner Line Permit: International travelers require an Inner Line Permit to travel through the Kinnaur-Spiti border (available in Shimla or Reckong Peo).

  • Cash: Carry enough cash; ATMs in Kaza often run out of money or face connectivity issues.
