India Travel Tips

Practical advice from locals and experienced travelers to make your India trip smoother, safer, and more memorable.

🗓️

Best Time to Visit

  • October–March is generally the best time for most of India — cooler temperatures and less rain.
  • Monsoon (June–September) is beautiful in Kerala and Goa but avoid mountainous roads.
  • Summer (April–June) is ideal for Himalayan destinations like Manali, Leh, and Spiti.
  • Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jaisalmer) is best in winter — October to February.
  • Always check local festival calendars — they can be an amazing or overwhelming time to visit.
🎫

Permits & Entry

  • Leh-Ladakh requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for foreign nationals and some restricted areas.
  • Rohtang Pass near Manali requires a permit — book online at least 2 days in advance.
  • Tribal areas in Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit (PAP).
  • Most national parks and wildlife sanctuaries require advance booking for safaris.
  • Carry multiple photocopies of your ID and permits — checkpoints are common in border areas.
🚌

Getting Around

  • Book train tickets well in advance on IRCTC — popular routes sell out weeks ahead.
  • For mountain roads, hire a local driver rather than self-driving unless you have experience.
  • KSRTC (Kerala), HRTC (Himachal), and other state buses are cheap and reliable for local travel.
  • Auto-rickshaws: always ask for the meter or agree on a fare before getting in.
  • Ola and Uber work in most cities — safer than negotiating with local taxis.
  • Shared jeeps are common and economical in hilly areas (Sikkim, HP, Uttarakhand).
🏨

Accommodation

  • Book accommodation in advance for peak season (Oct–Mar for most, May–Jun for hills).
  • Homestays offer a genuine local experience and are often cheaper than hotels.
  • Check reviews on Google Maps in addition to booking platforms — more honest for India.
  • Budget hotels: always inspect the room before paying. Check water supply and hot water.
  • Dharamshalas and Ashrams offer very cheap stays near temple towns (Rishikesh, Varanasi).
  • For remote areas, confirm that accommodation has reliable power/generator backup.
🍛

Food & Water

  • Always drink bottled or filtered water. Avoid ice in drinks at roadside stalls.
  • Street food is a highlight — eat where locals eat and where food is cooked fresh in front of you.
  • Thali meals (full plate) at local dhabas are filling, delicious, and very affordable.
  • Vegetarian options are plentiful across India — many restaurants are fully vegetarian.
  • Avoid raw salads and cut fruits from unknown vendors, especially in summer.
  • South Indian filter coffee and North Indian chai are must-tries in their respective regions.
💰

Money & Budget

  • Carry some cash — many smaller towns, villages, and markets don't accept cards.
  • ATMs are available in most towns but can run out of cash in remote areas — withdraw beforehand.
  • UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe) is widely accepted even at small shops in cities.
  • Bargaining is expected at markets and with auto-rickshaws — start at 50% of the asking price.
  • Budget travelers can comfortably manage on ₹1,500–₹2,500/day including food, transport, and stay.
  • Keep small change handy — vendors often struggle to break large notes.
🛡️

Safety Tips

  • India is generally safe for travelers. Trust your instincts and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep photocopies of your passport, visa, and important documents separately from originals.
  • Share your itinerary with someone you trust, especially for remote treks.
  • Avoid travelling alone at night in unfamiliar areas, particularly in cities.
  • Emergency numbers: Police 100, Ambulance 108, Women's Helpline 1091.
  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended — especially for adventure activities.
📱

Connectivity & Apps

  • Get a local SIM card (Airtel or Jio) — cheap, fast, and widely available.
  • Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) for areas with poor signal.
  • IRCTC app for train bookings, RedBus for buses, MakeMyTrip for flights and hotels.
  • IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet for budget domestic flights — book early for best fares.
  • 4G coverage is good in cities; expect patchy or no signal in deep mountains and jungles.
