How to reach Chikmagalur? Transport options?

Chikmagalur is a major hill station in Karnataka, and while it does not have its own commercial airport, it is well-connected by road and rail.

1. By Road (Most Recommended)

The drive to Chikmagalur is highly recommended due to the scenic views of the Western Ghats and coffee plantations.

• From Bangalore: Approximately 245 km (4.5–5 hours). The route via NH75 (Hassan) is common and well-maintained.

• Bus Services: * KSRTC: Reliable state-run buses (Airavat, Rajahamsa, and local services) operate frequently from Bangalore, Mangalore, and Mysore.

  • Private Operators: Companies like Sea Bird Tourist, Sugama, and SRS Travels run luxury and sleeper buses from major nearby cities.

• Self-Drive/Taxi: Taxis are easily available for hire from Bangalore, Mangalore, or Mysore.

2. By Rail

Chikmagalur has a small railway station (CMGR), but it has limited connectivity.

• Nearest Major Station: Kadur (DRU), located about 40 km away, is the most convenient railhead. It is on the main line connecting Bangalore and Shimoga/Hubli.

• Birur Junction (RRB): Another nearby option (approx. 48 km away) with good connectivity to major cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, and Mysore.

• Onward Travel: From Kadur or Birur, you can take a local KSRTC bus or a taxi (approx. 1-hour drive) to reach Chikmagalur.
