Goa has one of India's most distinctive food cultures — shaped by Portuguese influence, coastal ingredients, and local Konkani traditions. Here's what to look for around Old Goa:

Seafood (the heart of Goan cuisine)

  • Fish Curry Rice — the everyday Goan staple. A tangy, coconut-based curry (usually with kingfish or pomfret) served over steamed rice. Deceptively simple, incredibly satisfying.
  • Prawn Balchão — a fiery, pickled prawn preparation with a deep red masala. Very bold flavours.
  • Crab Xec Xec — crab in a roasted coconut and spice gravy. A local favourite that's hard to find outside Goa.
  • Recheado Pomfret — whole pomfret stuffed with a tangy red masala and pan-fried. A Goan classic.

Meat dishes

  • Sorpotel — pork cooked in a sour, spiced gravy, traditionally made during Christmas and feasts. Very common around Old Goa's Catholic neighbourhood restaurants.
  • Goan Pork Vindaloo — the original version, nothing like the over-spiced restaurant versions elsewhere. Tangy and deeply flavoured with vinegar and Kashmiri chilies.
  • Cafreal Chicken — grilled chicken marinated in a green herb masala (coriander, ginger, lime). Portuguese-origin dish, now a Goan staple.

Snacks & street food

  • Bebinca — the queen of Goan desserts. A layered coconut and egg pudding, rich and slightly caramelised. Don't leave without trying it.
  • Choriz Pão — Goan spiced sausage stuffed into a local bread roll (pão). A great quick bite.
  • Ros Omelette — an omelette dunked in a spiced coconut curry gravy, served with pão. A beloved street snack near churches and markets.

Drinks

  • Feni — Goa's iconic local spirit, made from cashew apple or coconut toddy. Try it at least once — cashew feni especially is unique to Goa.
  • Sol Kadi — a cooling drink made from kokum and coconut milk. Perfect after a hot afternoon of sightseeing.

Where to eat near Old Goa The area around Old Goa itself is quiet, but a short drive gets you to great options. Panaji (10 min away) has excellent Goan restaurants like Ritz Classic and Venite. The village of Ribandar (between Panaji and Old Goa) has some lovely riverside eateries too.

Try to eat where locals eat — small, no-frills "lunch homes" serving fish curry rice on banana leaves are often the best meals you'll have.
